There’s something special about the quiet landscape that keeps bringing us back. On this trip, we visited Marfa, where we stayed at the El Cosmico. If you’re headed out that way, I highly recommend staying in one of their renovated vintage trailers, or even a teepee! It’s owned by Austin’s Liz Lambert, of Hotel San Jose and Jo’s Coffee fame. Such a unique place!

Next stop was the Indian Lodge, which was built in the 1930′s by the Civilian Conservation Corp and is nestled in the Davis Mountains. It’s only 20 minutes from Marfa, 30 minutes from Balmorhea-a glorious spring-fed swimming pool, and 20 minutes from the McDonald Observatory, where they host “star parties,” with constellation and telescope viewing. I highly recommend it!

Everyone getting ready for the star party to begin. They have red lights everywhere so as not to affect star viewing. This is one of the darkest observatories in the U.S., so the stars are absolutely AMAZING from here.

Our last stop was in Marathon, TX where we stayed at the Gage Hotel, an historic hotel 1-hour from Big Bend National Park. The hotel has lush courtyards, a heated pool that the kids love, and an amazing restaurant and bar. But be forewarned, there’s not much else going on in Marathon. There’s literally one short main street with about 3 restaurants, a bookstore, an art gallery, annnnd that’s about it! It’s very charming.

We hit up Marathon Coffee for a big, delicious breakfast and small town hospitality.

We celebrated Georgia’s 2nd birthday while we were there. When we were singing to her, she didn’t quite know what was going on, but she definitely enjoyed her cupcake and even shared it with her sis. Such sweeties.

We all had a blast and can’t wait to go back! Hope you all had a fun spring break, too!

This past year, since Georgia came along, he’s the one who gets up at the crack of dawn every single morning and somehow manages to keep “Curious Georgia” entertained and get Maggie off to school. He’s thoughtful, patient, and hilarious and will do anything to make sure his girls are happy and taken care of. Did I mention that he does the dishes and probably changes more diapers than I do? He’s pretty much perfect. (and really, really cute.)
